Lutein & Zeaxanthin for Eye Health

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the eye and in foods. Their best-known supplement evidence in eye health is tied closely to the AREDS2 research context.

What AREDS2 found

NEI reports that, within AREDS2, participants with low dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin were among those who benefited most from supplemental lutein plus zeaxanthin. That finding belongs to the trial population and should not be reframed as proof that these supplements improve vision in everyone.

Food and supplement are different decisions

Dietary sources and concentrated supplements are not interchangeable from a dosing or safety perspective. A supplement decision should consider the amount, other ingredients, medications and your reason for taking it.

When comparing products

Check the amount per serving and whether the marketing cites research that actually used the same ingredient form, dose, population and outcome.
