AREDS2 Supplements Explained
AREDS2 is not a generic synonym for an eye vitamin. It refers to a defined formulation studied for progression of age-related macular degeneration in particular groups.
What is in the AREDS2 formula?
| Nutrient | NEI AREDS2 formula |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C | 500 mg |
| Vitamin E | 400 IU |
| Copper (cupric oxide) | 2 mg |
| Lutein | 10 mg |
| Zeaxanthin | 2 mg |
| Zinc | 80 mg |
Who should consider it?
NEI advises consulting a doctor or eye-care professional about which supplement, if any, is right for you. The AREDS findings should not be generalized into a recommendation that all adults take the formula.
Why this matters when comparing products
A supplement containing lutein or zinc is not thereby an AREDS2 formula. Compare all ingredients and amounts with the defined formulation when AREDS2 equivalence is relevant.
