How to Read an Eye Supplement Label
A front label tells you what a product wants to emphasize. The Supplement Facts panel tells you much more about what you're actually comparing.
Label checklist
- Serving size: Is the advertised amount per capsule or per full daily serving?
- Amounts: Record exact quantities rather than relying on ingredient names.
- Formula type: If a product invokes AREDS2, compare the full formula with the NEI formulation.
- Claims: Separate normal structure/function language from claims that imply disease treatment.
- Warnings: Review contraindications and interactions.
- Other ingredients: Check allergens and inactive ingredients relevant to you.
FDA context: dietary-supplement structure/function claims are not pre-approved by FDA; firms making them must have substantiation and comply with applicable disclaimer/notification rules. Disease-treatment claims are a different category.
